The robot design contest is held for the newcomers in the robotics team to understand the basic concepts of constructing robots, and experience the robotics competition environment.
In this competition, participants need to design a robot that can maneuver through the track, grab objects and throw them to a desired target.
Participants will have the opportunity to apply the basic science concept of projectile motion in designing the robot. Each round, the mission will first be carried out by an automatic robot, which is then switched into a manual robot in the middle of the game. The mission is divided into 2 parts, the automatic part where the robot maneuvers to the desired location and switches into a manual robot, and the manual part where the robot needs to take the “buns” and throw them to the basket.

Won Best Idea Award in ABU Robocon 2012
HKUST Robocon Team Won Best Idea Award in ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest 2012.
The Robocon team formed by engineering students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) represented Hong Kong to compete in ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest on 19 Aug 2012 and won the Best Idea Award for two consecutive years.
This year, Hong Kong is the host of the contest which attracted a total of 17 teams from 16 countries and regions. The theme of the contest–“Peng On Dai Gat, In Pursuit of Peace and Prosperity”–was set according to the Bun Festival, one of the most representative festivals in Hong Kong. Within the game, robots will be the bun-snatchers. They will travel through the Tunnel, cross the Bridge and land on the Island where the Bun Tower locates. They have to snatch the “Peng On Bun” in order to achieve “Peng On Dai Gat”.

Won Third Class Award Twice In a Row
HKUST Students Won in the Freescale Smart Car Competition (South China Region) Twice in a Row.
The Smart Car team of the HKUST Robotics Team won the 3rd Class Award in the Camera Category of the 7th Freescale Smart Car Competition (South China Region) in Xiamen in July 2012. This is the first time HKUST students attempted in the Camera Category of the competition after receiving the 3rd Class Award in another category last year.
The team was formed by three undergraduate students, Yee Pui LAM, Ruixi LIN (both from Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering) and Cheuk Ho YUEN (from Computer Engineering Program). They have spent 7 months to design the program and build the car in order to achieve the best time to complete the 45-meter route of the game. The car needs to detect the route from its built-in camera and calculates the response action for moving forward. The team finally completed the route with a speed of 2.2m/s and earned the 3rd Class Award among 121 teams participating in the Camera Category in the South China Region.
